The best steak in Lisbon has a new
location in the city center
True to its tradition, the Café de São Bento menu remains centered on the essentials: the steak. The quality of the meat, the precise cut, and the sauce inspired by the classic Bife à Marrare continue to define the restaurant’s identity, whose recipe remains a well-kept secret. The steaks are prepared from sirloin or flank and served in three emblematic versions: the iconic Bife à Café de São Bento, the traditional Bife à Portuguesa, and the grilled steak, designed for purists, always accompanied by crispy French fries and customization options.
To complement the experience, the menu features a carefully selected range of appetizers and side dishes, maintaining the spirit of the Lisbon café, and also includes alternatives to meat. Alongside the classics are options such as foie gras, steak tartare, veal croquettes, clams à Bulhão Pato, and oysters. In addition to the already well-known gratinéed cod, the fish dishes now include cod à Brás, reinforcing the offering for those seeking fish dishes without sacrificing the tradition and excellence that make Café de São Bento a Lisbon landmark.
THE BEST STEAK IN LISBON IS NOW IN DOWNTOWN / BAIXA!
The same tradition on
a street with centuries of history.
Café de São Bento Baixa is born looking towards the future, housed in the historic Hotel 1904 Benfica, on the corner of Rua do Regedor and Rua das Portas de Santo Antão, in the heart of Lisbon’s Baixa district. Larger and more sophisticated, it occupies one of the emblematic rooms of the former Club Bristol and pays homage to the tradition of the literary cafés of the Pombaline Baixa, such as the Cafés Marrare, whose famous recipe for Bife à Marrare has inspired the secret sauce of the iconic Bife do Café de São Bento for over 40 years.
With a privileged view over Rua das Portas de Santo Antão, Café de São Bento Baixa reinforces the presence of Lisbon’s best steak in the city’s historic center.
The space is imposing yet intimate from the entrance, marked by the velvet curtain and the elegant wooden staircase leading to the main hall. With approximately 150 m² and a capacity for 70 people, it is the largest Café de São Bento to date, standing out for its entrance bar, mirrored ceilings, red velvets, fine woods, and modernist sculptures by Leopoldo de Almeida, which reinforce the sophistication and classic timelessness that define the identity of Café de São Bento.

Bristol Club:
Luxury and Modernist Art
Rua das Portas de Santo Antão spans centuries of Lisbon’s history and, since the 14th century, has been a fundamental axis connecting the city center and its periphery, functioning as one of the gates of the old Fernandine wall. Known as Corredoura, this straight, now pedestrianized street connects Largo de São Domingos to Largo da Anunciada, parallel to Avenida da Liberdade, and has assumed a central role in the cultural, social, and commercial life of the Baixada Fluminense region over time, definitively adopting its current name in 1956.
Home to aristocratic palaces, theaters, nightclubs, restaurants, and cultural institutions, the street is now one of Lisbon’s main cultural meeting points, bringing together emblematic spaces such as the Teatro D. Maria II, the Coliseu dos Recreios, the Teatro Politeama, the Casa do Alentejo, and the Lisbon Geographical Society. Its progressive rehabilitation has reinforced the vibrant and bohemian character that has always marked this historic thoroughfare.
It was in this context that, at the beginning of the 20th century, the Bristol Club emerged, located between 1918 and 1928 on the corner of Rua das Portas de Santo Antão and Rua do Jardim do Regedor, in the building that today houses the Café de São Bento. A true icon of bohemian Lisbon, it stood out for its luxury, modernist art, and cultural life, featuring works by artists such as Almada Negreiros and Leopoldo de Almeida, whose sculptures still remain in the space today. With the installation of the Café de São Bento and the Hotel 1904 Benfica, the building is reborn as a meeting place, respecting its historical legacy and contributing to the revitalization of this emblematic area of the city.
