The history of our famous steak dates back to the end of the 18th century, with the arrival in Lisbon of the Neapolitan António Marrare – founder of the iconic Cafés Marrare. At the beginning of the 19th century, António Marrare created the recipe for the famous steak, which quickly became known throughout the city.
In 1982, the founders of Café de São Bento went in search of the original recipe, perfecting it in the first years of the establishment so that, to this day, it has remained unchanged.
Thus, for more than 40 years, those looking for the best steak in Lisbon have always come to savor the same steak, but not just any steak – unanimously considered the best steak in Lisbon. Is it the cut, the quality of the meat, the preparation, or the sauce? It’s all of that, and some secrets carefully guarded since 1982.

For 43 years making history in Rua de São Bento, the legendary steaks of Café de São Bento have now arrived in Cascais. With the opening of a new space in the town’s historic centre, located at 71 Rua Alexandre Herculano, it will be possible to maintain the old tradition while telling a new story.
